On the occasion of the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, ›La Galleria‹ –the Venetian venue of Galerie Dorothea van der Koelen, Mainz (Germany) – is pleased to present »Art Beyond Boundaries«,, a group exhibition featuring works by 30 artists from 14 different countries, celebrating the gallery’s 25th anniversary. The exhibition marks an important milestone and reflects the artistic and curatorial focus that has shaped the gallery’s identity over the years. It brings together artists who have played a key role in its history: Lore Bert (D), Hellmut Bruch (A), Daniel Buren (F), Eduardo Chillida (E), Sebastian Dannenberg (D), Heinz Gappmayr (A), Hans Jörg Glattfelder (CH), Nigel Hall (UK), José Heerkens (NL), Gottfried Honegger (CH), Mohammed Kazem (UAE), Rashid Al Khalifa (BHR), Wulf Kirschner (D), Joseph Kosuth (USA), Carolin Liebl & Nikolas Schmid-Pfähler (D), Christian Megert (CH), Patrick Mimran (F), François Morellet (F), Nam Tchun-Mo (ROK), Fabrizio Plessi (I), Arne Quinze (B), Mario Reis (D), Vera Röhm (D), Reinhard Roy (D), Turi Simeti (I), Günther Uecker (D), Martin Willing (D), Guang Yao Wu (CHN).
The project is in line with the theme of the Biennale, embracing and expanding the need to break down barriers – cultural, perceptual, and symbolic – in order to tune into more subtle and often overlooked dimensions. In a time marked by suffering and destruction, by ever-new wars across the globe, it is important to seek out what unites us, not what divides us. Only in this way can peace emerge.
30 artists from 14 countries and spanning a wide range of generations express their visual contributions to this special exhibition in highly diverse ways.
The exhibited works appeal to the senses and open up new perspectives. Beauty becomes a vehicle through which new awareness can emerge. Art is beauty; ugliness is illustration. The power of beauty can sensitise people and contribute to peaceful coexistence – particularly across cultures, as in this exhibition.
In a world that is difficult to define in simple terms, »Art Beyond Boundaries« presents itself as a polyphony, a harmony between worlds. Each artist offers their own vision and opens up a variety of perspectives for the viewer, reflecting the complexity of the present. It is an invitation to perceive the other as an enrichment rather than a threat.
Following the previous exhibitions »Visions of Beauty« and »Ways of Hope«, this show continues a curatorial path that explores art as an open space for dialogue, capable of overcoming boundaries and redefining perspectives. »Art Beyond Boundaries« develops as a fluid territory, where different languages, sensitivities, and artistic practices meet, overlap, and influence each other. Twenty-five years after its founding, ›La Galleria‹ renews its commitment: to be a place of encounter, listening, and openness, where art continues to create connections that go beyond geographical and social borders.
