Ikona Gallery presents the photography exhibition Fotografie di un'esposizione.

All the photographs on display already have a history with Venice, having featured in major exhibitions curated by Ikona across the city from 1979 to the present day.

Photography has always confronted us with life and reality—with our own lives, the world and the other. This is all the more urgent in a city that is itself an image—an Ikona—where everything flows without dialogue.

“I like to think of this exhibition as Photographs at an Exhibition, echoing Pictures at an Exhibition, Modest Mussorgsky’s celebrated piano suite, and to imagine visitors moving through it as if on a promenade—looking and listening, asking themselves questions before the realities captured by the photographer, within images that reveal fragments of the past. Each photograph is defined by its caption—artist, place, person, history and date—but it is the viewer’s gaze that provides the answer and experiences the past as its own present.”
