Ettore Fico’s relationship with the models in his studio extended beyond the simple sculptural posing of their bodies.

Always addressed by name and portrayed in intimate and erotic poses and attitudes, the models shared a friendly, emotional, and intimate relationship with the artist. Fico derived this approach from his teacher Serralunga, who also worked with models and created an intimate, private atmosphere with some—if not all—of them within his studio.

Fico’s nudes are sensual and erotic. The portrayed figure is heightened by his swift, decisive mark-making, with no hesitation visible in his rendering of anatomy and bodies, whether in charcoal, watercolour, or India ink. The rhythm of the works’ execution is palpable, while the dynamism of the bodies is made vibrant through his rapid, Baroque line.

Ettore Fico emerges as a master of the twentieth-century nude, reaffirming his place as one of the major artistic rediscoveries of our time.
